This 20-hour online course is designed for Lebanese residents interested in the preservation of their marine environment, and who would like to enhance their ocean literacy by exploring the vital link between the global ocean and the unique Lebanese coast.

 

The course is divided into four thematic sections:

  1. Our One Ocean: A scientific overview of marine ecosystems, their global services, and the critical threats they face.
  2. Governing Our Ocean: An introduction to international frameworks like UNCLOS and the SDGs, emphasizing the common heritage of humankind.
  3. The Lebanese Context: A deep dive into local biodiversity, blue economy, maritime archaeological heritage and threats affecting our coast.
  4. The Way Forward: An overview of current marine conservation initiatives such as Marine Protected Areas and citizen-led projects driving meaningful change.

learning outcomes

  • Obtain a basic understanding of the Ocean, the goods and services it provides, the threats to the Ocean, how to live in a more sustainable way with the Ocean;
  • Understand the linkages between Ocean governance and sustainable and equitable human use, application of the principle of the common heritage of humankind, the needs of future generations;
  • Identify priority issues, trends and future challenges in Ocean issues, locally and globally; 
  • Understand and describe the Lebanese marine context (science, governance, heritage, conservation);
  • Identify the opportunities and pathways to engage in collective action contributing to the sustainable management of coastal resources.
