After a two-year COVID hiatus, IOI Canada was excited to hold its first in-person event again with the 2022 Elisabeth Mann Borgese Ocean Lecture. Organised in celebration of IOI’s 50th anniversary, this event took place at Dalhousie University on 19th May.
The evening began with an introductory online presentation from German author Tirza Meyer (KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm) based on her new book, Elisabeth Mann Borgese and the Law of the Sea.The keynote address was given by award-winning academic, researcher and author, Rashid Sumaila, Professor and Canada Research Chair in Interdisciplinary Ocean and Fisheries Economics, University of British Columbia, who focused on Canada’s Oceans and Coasts: Pathways to Sustainability in a Sea of Change. Moderated by IOI Canada Senior Research Fellow Ratana Chuenpagdee (Memorial University of Newfoundland and TBTI Partnership), a panel of discussants then reflected on the presentation and associated issues with Megan Bailey (Dalhousie University), Robert Rangeley (Oceana) and Nancy Shackell (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) providing the perspectives of academia, eNGOs and government respectively.
After an opportunity for questions from the audience, the evening concluded with informal discussions and networking over drinks, which seemed a suitable way to celebrate both Elisabeth Mann Borgese and IOI’s 50th anniversary!
