To finalise the academic year 2025 the IOI Chile Centre organised two activities in Temuco, Chile at the end of November.
The 27 November Workshop: Los Pueblos Indígenas en la Gobernanza de los Océanos was an open workshop about indigenous peoples’ role in the implementation of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement, known as the High Seas Treaty, which will enter into force in January 2026. The participants of the workshop were Cristina Ñancucheo, from the National Corporation for Indigenous Development; Camila Calderón, a marine scientist working with coastal communities in Chile; and Dr. Nicolas Ojeda, Director of the IOI Chile Centre. The discussion focused on the current role of coastal communities in ocean management and the sustainable use of marine resources, as well as how indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge can be used, with their consent, in achieving the objectives of the High Seas Treaty, as expressed in its article 7.
The second event was a lecture about the Law of the Sea (28 Nov Lecture: El Derecho del Mar: Práctica y Desafíos) given by a very special guest, Dr Maria Teresa Infante, member of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and a lecturer in the IOI Training Course held in Chile in 2025. The masterclass lasted two hours and comprehensively covered the main areas regulated by the Law of the Sea regime and current developments and challenges.
The IOI Chile Centre will continue organising online and in-person activities for the education of future ocean leaders throughout 2026.
