With new expert full day workshops on leadership and emerging thematics

The IOI Southern Africa (IOI-SA) is organising the annual 4-week Ocean Governance Training Programme from 31 August to 25 September.

 

The Ocean Governance Training programme is designed to enhance ocean governance knowledge and capacity across Africa, fostering collaboration, policy harmonization, and sustainable ocean management.

 

The course will be delivered in a hybrid format, consisting of online learning sessions during the first week , followed by 3 weeks of in-person training at The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), Kirstenbosch Gardens, Cape Town, South Africa. Additionally, participants will engage in field trips and assignments to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts.

 

NEW: Expert full day workshops on leadership and emerging thematics

This year’s programme will include a number of full day workshops seeking to integrate experiential and case-based learning, and equip participants with skills for navigating the interface between different forms of knowledge (eg. science and indigenous knowledge), policy and implementation. These workshops will also aim  to build leadership capacity, and skills in facilitation and negotiation.

 

The workshops focus on:

  • Workshop 1: The UN Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and its Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ)
  • Workshop 2: Application of ocean accounting in marine spatial planning
  • Workshop 3: Introduction to co-designing solutions for ocean sustainability
  • Workshop 4: Climate change and Africa’s blue economy
  • Workshop 5: Leadership for Ocean Governance

 

The training programme is designed for early and mid-career professionals, educators, researchers, and civil society members from African countries who have responsibilities or interests in coastal and marine governance. Participants should preferably be between 20 and 40 years of age, and possess at least a first degree in a field relevant to marine affairs, governance, or science.
