A focus on our first IOI Ocean Academy deliveries in Gambia, Mozambique and Colombia
The IOI Ocean Academy Directors organised and successfully delivered eleven online modules on Ocean Literacy in March and April in Ewe, Spanish, English, Portuguese, Urdu, Wolof, Georgian and Marathi. A total of over 250 participants successfully completed the modules delivered over the past two months with three of the modules delivered by recently established nodes in Colombia, Mozambique, and The Gambia, each delivering their first module in Spanish, Portuguese, and Wolof, respectively.
The IOI Ocean Academy in the Gambia, provided an overview of ocean governance and fisheries management to an audience of interested laypersons. The lectures primarily addressed the interests of the maritime communities such as seafarers and fishers and covered key concepts such as the different maritime zones under UNCLOS, and rights and responsibilities within those zones. The sessions discussed illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and the legal and institutional responses to it and concluded by emphasising the need for greater ocean literacy and ongoing collaboration among naval, fisheries, and environmental stakeholders in The Gambia.
In Mozambique, the first IOI Ocean Academy module aimed to strengthen local ocean literacy in by equipping secondary school teachers and education stakeholders with the skills to integrate ocean-related themes into curricula and everyday teaching. Participants gained practical skills useful to design lessons, implement school-based projects, and foster sustainability, ocean stewardship, and responsible citizenship among school-age learners.
The module delivered by IOI Ocean Academy in Colombia was aimed at primary and secondary school teachers, public officials, community leaders from coastal areas, fishermen, and the general public interested in learning about the ocean and its sustainable use, and the benefits of Colombia’s bioceanic context.
