On 3 June 2026, the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) celebrated its 35th anniversary in Bremen together with around 200 guests from science, policy, industry, and civil society. The event provided an opportunity to reflect on three and a half decades of research, collaboration, and commitment to tropical coastal regions around the world. Discussions focused on the growing challenges facing oceans and coastal communities, including climate change, biodiversity loss, food security, and the need for sustainable and equitable development pathways. The celebration also highlighted the importance of long-term international partnerships and capacity development in addressing these global challenges.

The International Ocean Institute was represented at the event by Peter Leder, IOI Treasurer and Governor, and Rebecca Lahl, Director of IOI Germany. Rebecca Lahl was appointed Director of IOI Germany in December 2024 by ZMT, where she serves as Co-Lead of Programme Area 5, Ocean Literacy, Equity and Leadership.

The anniversary marked not only a milestone in ZMT's history but also an opportunity to celebrate the many partnerships that have shaped the institute since its founding in 1991. As the host institution of IOI Germany since 2002, ZMT has maintained a close and productive relationship with the International Ocean Institute network for more than two decades. This fruitful collaboration began under the leadership of the first IOI Germany Director, Werner Ekau, who headed the Centre from its establishment in 2002 until 2019 and subsequently resumed the role until his retirement in 2022. Through joint training programmes, summer schools, workshops, and international exchanges, the partnership has contributed significantly to strengthening ocean governance, capacity development, and knowledge exchange worldwide.

Today, under the leadership of Rebecca Lahl and with the continued support of ZMT, IOI Germany remains an active and valued member of the global IOI network. ZMT and IOI look forward to building on this strong foundation and continuing to work together towards a sustainable and resilient future for oceans and coastal communities.
