2026 Portfolio of the IOI annual in-person Training Programmes on Ocean Governance

Planning Calendar and Save-the-Date

The IOI Training Programmes on Ocean Governance are designed for mid-career practitioners; scientists, policy makers, educators and decision makers in Ocean Governance. Since 1981 the IOI has conducted and managed training and capacity building programmes in Ocean Governance focussing on contemporary approaches to coastal and ocean management, encompassing current challenges and opportunities and retaining an emphasis on moral, ethical and legal values (equity and peaceful uses of the ocean) under the governance architecture of UNCLOS and related international instruments and agreements.

The training is delivered from IOI Centres in different countries, with different regional foci, via classroom-based lectures, interactive discussions, field trips, simulations and exercises, individual participant presentations, and international round tables. The experience prioritises peer-to-peer exchange and networking, while learning and guidance are offered by expert faculty and mentors, supported through appropriate learning tools.

Graduate Alumni of the IOI training programmes will be in a position to successfully transmit and apply the acquired knowledge on return to their institutions, serving as educators and ocean advocates in their homeland.

The IOI enjoys strong links with a growing global IOI Alumni network of several thousands of IOI trained practitioners globally.
